Abstract: This dissertation draws upon the women’s magazine to investigate the relationship between the average Singaporean family and its domestic interior. The indispensable role of women in maintaining her domestic household was evidently reflected in popular mass-media, such as the women’s magazine, in post-independence Singapore, so that the proliferation of home-related content in mass-media provided invaluable insights into the domestic interior of the time. Incidentally, it was also the period witnessing a mass resettlement of the population into the Housing and Development Board’s (HDB) mass-produced public housing, such that the almost universal provision of the ‘standard’ HDB flat has become the common site for most Singaporean homes, justifying the homogenisation of the Singaporean family. Hence, by documenting both the domestic and design-related articles featured in issues of Her World magazine -- from 1960 to 1987 -- transformations in its representation of the ‘ideal’ home interior could be rationalised alongside shifting familial practices and values over time. In illustrating this relationship thus, observing the shifting spatial practices of home interior has also revealed deeper perspectives on the transformations of the Singaporean family, where its implications could then be further studied.
