FEASIBILITY STUDY OF VARIOUS WATER-COOLED AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEMS IN AN EXISTING OFFICE BUILDING. ScholarBank@NUS Repository. | Abstract: | There are various types of water-cooled air conditioning systems that are available for an office. There are many factors that influence the final choice of an appropriate system. Some of these are the system’s merit and demerit factors. Even when a suitable system has been identified, this has to be balanced with the existing building’s design and layout, considering that the replacement will be a retrofitting exercise. Space availability, locations and floor loadings are some considerations to be taken into account when evaluating a particular system. Where energy conservation is a major consideration, an energy-efficient system has to be looked into. Apart from the many factors and onsiderations, the various air conditioning systems that are available in the market are evaluated based on energy consumption of each system. The Return of Investment is also considered. The three systems evaluated in this study are, firstly, floor-by-floor packaged unit, secondly, central chiller air conditioning system and finally, the watercooled VRV system. From the data collected and collated, the water-cooled VRV system appeared the most suitable system to replace the existing watercooled package unit system. The water-cooled VRV system has the edge over other system in terms of installation flexibility, potential energy saving and a lower investment cost. It also occupies a smaller area as compared to a chiller system which would require a plant room and AHU rooms for air distribution. Although the water-cooled VRV system did not emerge as the best among the best, it offers as one of the most practical air conditioning system to be used in an existing building where it is time to undergo a retrofitting exercise. | URI: | https://scholarbank.nus.edu.sg/handle/10635/222068 |
