dc.description.abstract | Due to the relatively new introduction of Building Information Modeling (BIM) in Singapore's construction industry, there has yet to be a clear establishment of an appropriate standard of care in the use of BIM for design. BIM introduces new design capabilities which can potentially alter the way designs are created. However, there is a lack of understanding in the degree of reliance allowed on the software capabilities during design in an acceptable standard of care. The objective of this paper i to propose a framework in the use of BIM for design that can be used as the benchmark for the industry practice that is of an acceptable standard of care. This paper, first tests if complete reliance of the software would be an acceptable standard of care, since, this would be the simplest method of use, where on further actions would be required to be taken. For purposes of conducting the test, this paper has been designed to identify and evaluate risks involved in the complete reliance on the BIM software capabilities. Upon determining the above, using data collected, a framework for the standard of care required from designers during design is proposed. This would allow designers to gain a deeper understanding of expectations and requirements from them during design and would be helpful for new BIM designers in understanding risks they face and actions that should be taken to avoid such risks. | |
