Abstract: The society of the 21st century establishes its own laws and rules for almost all aspects of life. The concept of the family is beginning to change where individuals are now liberated and are seen as independent bodies. With this said however, they are still apart of a family unit and the solidarity of the family has to be maintained. Hence, this influences the architecture of medium to high-rise residential blocks. The form of our residential buildings now are dictated by the latest technologies, achievements in science, implementation of the cutting-edge construction, energy saving, aerodynamic and ecological solutions. More often than not, building aesthetic is based on the on the calculation of optimal solution by technical software. The final result depends on one specific team of designers and their preferences in style. The building inevitably retains a rigid shape. Every room hides behind a single façade, lifeless, merely expressing the machine aesthetic. My thesis ambition is to present a democratic residential project that allow families to have spatial freedom whilst still maintaining family bonds. This alternative housing type would consist of a school and residential housing that sits directly above it. More importantly, the idea of the conventional home will be challenged to allow for the democratisation of the family.
