Abstract: This research examines the concept of authenticity as it is perceived by locals and tourists within the heritage district of Chinatown. Questioning the validity of a concept of authenticity that is solely hinged upon the historical aspects of the district, the research aims to suggest an experience-based authenticity as an alternative way to understand the value Chinatown without recalling back to a past condition that no longer exists. Using an Exploratory Factor Analysis model, it was uncovered the factors that impact the sense of this alternative form of authenticity. From the results, it was discovered that contemporary and social factors had the largest impact on the authentic experience for local users of Chinatown; while for tourists, it was physical heritage and social factors. Surprisingly, traditional trades had little impact on the authentic experience of both groups. From the results of this empirical study, it suggests new approaches are necessary concerning heritage policy making and the conservation of Chinatown.
