dc.description.abstract | Urban congestion is a major problem that is currently faced by many Asian cities due to the increasing world population and the increase in car ownerships. This problem of urban congestion has a ‘domino’ effect on the Asian cities’ metropolitan economies and environment. Hence, it is important for the government of the Asian cities to reduce or curb urban congestion, so that it will not affect them in the long run. Research on the concept of ITS is still relatively new as the whole idea and deployment of ITS only started in the 1990s. With technological advancements, adoption of smart transportation systems or intelligent transportation systems (ITS) will have great potential to play an important role in reducing urban congestion in Asian cities. Currently, there are increasing number of studies and research conducted on the area of smart transportation systems. Furthermore, more Asian countries are also moving towards the implementation of ITS into their traffic management policies, and have seen positive effects after the implementation of ITS. This can be seen in Asian countries such as Singapore, Japan and South Korea. This research reviews the different ITS features that are available in Singapore, Japan and South Korea, as well as the smart ‘mobility’ innovations that are currently in the market. The area of focus is on how Singapore can adopt certain ITS features from South Korea and Japan and integrate the smart ‘mobility’ innovations into Singapore’s ITS system. In addition, obstacles that may be faced during the adoption and integration and new ITS features will also be reviewed. Overall, the research showed that improvements could be made to Singapore’s ITS system. ITS features such as EPMS, VICS and BIS/BMS could be adopted to Singapore’s ITS system. Integration of the smart ‘mobility’ innovations into Singapore’s ITS system is also feasible and beneficial for Singapore in the long term. Furthermore, with the support of various authorities or government body, a better future for Singapore’s ITS system would be realized. | |
