Abstract: This thesis begins with studying Special Education Schools in Singapore. The driver of the thesis is the critique that there is more that can be done in Special Education schools to improve the quality of education and personal development of the users. The research includes a study of 6 existing schools with respect to the school framework and site surroundings. The research further explores the theory of inclusion and specific learning environments. The combination of user groups derived for the project departs from current models and is an initial design generator. The design process begins with the school curriculum and is further translated through programmatic provisions. Chapter One covers the areas of research interest and begins the exploration of the design brief. Chapter Two addresses the study of existing SPED schools and the choice of site and its opportunities. In Chapter Three, I developed the programmatic design of the school, leading to design strategies and architectural translation in Chapters Four and Five. Theories covered are mainly with regards to the inclusion theory and alternative education for special needs individuals. The thesis aims to address the myriad of possibilities in Special Education in Singapore today. It also attempts to demonstrate how a melding of architectural design and curriculum design can enhance the quality of education for special needs individuals in Singapore.
