Abstract: Shopping centre is a society of consumption. It is a new invention in the last century. Singapore has always fondly claimed herself as a bustling and vibrant shopping city. Shopping seems to be a passion among all in this island. We dine in, we shop, we hang around, we watch a movie, we drink, we play and now we even "swim" in a shopping centre. Shopping centre has grown beyond the economic function, The study will begin with the illustration of the change in the shopping centres in Singapore, from the national-building period to the current days' looking into the features in the particular period of time. Case studies selected will be investigated from the aspects of social context, site context, architectural design and layout and the experience created in the shopping centre. The question raised is, In different period of time, "what has changed?", "how has it changed?" And "what caused the change?" Today, the architectural trend has shifted; shopping centre tries to boost itself with its branding. Hence, recent shopping centre tends to engage the consumers in a sensory way that caused the shopping a memorable experience. Despite the uniqueness claimed, is the space really evoking the experience or is it merely a tool of marketing to draw attention? Comparison between the Experience Economy and the recent shopping centres design will be made, to show the relationship of the recent trend with the economy. The research adopts both the qualitative and quantitative methodology in investigating the issue.
