Congestion and traffic accidents have long affected many cities worldwide, to a point where it is seen as a norm. However, that may no longer be the case. This research paper addresses the problem of traffic related issues and offers the use of autonomous vehicles as a solution. With a focus on Singapore, the paper highlights the potential benefits of autonomous vehicles, as well as the limitations of this innovative technology. In addition, the paper identifies the Singapore government’s plans for autonomous vehicles and illustrates how autonomous vehicles are in tandem with other government initiatives such as the car-lite movement and Singapore’s progress into a smart nation. This study aims at identifying the feasibility of autonomous vehicles, with an emphasis on determining the market acceptance levels of the public. While it was hypothesized that the citizens of Singapore would be favourable towards the use of autonomous vehicles, the research results proved otherwise. Survey results displayed a 44% positive market acceptance rate amongst the sample size of 350 respondents. Socio-demographic indicators found that younger respondents (below 35 years old) were more receptive towards autonomous vehicles, as well as females being more open towards autonomous vehicles. Following which, focus group discussions were held to understand the rationale behind the survey results. It was found that safety was the fundamental concern behind citizens’ reservations toward autonomous vehicles and that citizens were only willing to ride on autonomous vehicles once it has proven its safety and reliability. Then, in-depth interviews were conducted to shed some light from the stakeholder’s perspective and to provide valuable insights on this research. The research findings provide policymakers with a sensing of market sentiments and allow for the formulation of targeted campaigns to allay the worries of citizens. Only then can autonomous vehicles realize its full potential.
