dc.description.abstract | The Singapore government has pledged to achieve a 36% reduction in emission intensity by the year 2030. With the construction, operation, and maintenance of buildings being responsible for a significant fraction of energy use, building retrofits can offer substantial opportunities in reducing overall energy consumption. Generally, the Standard Practice in Singapore would be that retrofits are conducted in stages due to various reasons such as financial barriers and lack of knowledge on building retrofits. Past research has shown the possibility of implementing Integrated System (IS) retrofit in overseas context as part of their retrofitting strategy. The adoption of IS retrofits can ensure that whole building retrofits are optimized as the interactions between building systems in an IS retrofit can potentially generate lower loads and requirements. This dissertation encompasses 3 main approaches, model calibration of a case study, evaluation of a set of surveyed retrofits and economic cost savings. Calibrated with observational, experimental and energy audit data, Mean Bias Error (MBE) and Coefficient of Variation of the Root Mean Square Error [CV (RMSE)] of the model are established as 4.00% and 11.80% respectively, which are within the most stringent values. Next, potential retrofits are identified based on the survey results gathered from 30 energy professionals. Based on various retrofit options, the IS and Standard Practice (SP) retrofit options have seen energy savings and EUI performance improvement of up to 30% and 20% respectively. With the energy saving data, lifecycle cost analysis (LCCA) was conducted. The dissertation has investigated that the IS retrofit approach as compared to the SP retrofit approach is able to generate significant energy consumption reduction and Energy Use Intensity improvement of up to 30%, achieve a shorter payback period and lower lifecycle cost, with the right configuration of Energy Conservation Measures. Hence, the IS Retrofit will be the most optimal retrofit approach to meet the needs for energy reduction. | |
