dc.description.abstract | This thesis is based on the critique on spectacle and questions the endless competition for tallest and more iconic buildings all over the world. Fearful of becoming ‘Singa-bore’, Singapore is caught in the rat race to fill the small island with iconic buildings and international events, such as F1 and YOG. So, what’s next? Constantly feeling insecure, Singapore proclaims that we want more. In the same desire for achieving more and more, the next spectacle that is going to happen in Singapore is the biggest event in the world, the Olympic Game. Olympic game has grown significantly in scale over the years, with bigger and more spectacular stadiums being built. Despite the large amount of money and wastage involved, more and more cities are working towards the Olympic dream for the glory, tourism, media and money. Is there more? Is there life after Olympics? Based on the scenario that Singapore will host Olympic 2020, the thesis presents an instant Olympic city, right in Marina Bay. As opposed to the permanent Olympic stadiums built for the Olympic images, the project will look into the transient and impermanence nature of architecture and also the smallest elements that can manifest into a spectacle of architecture and media fiesta. | |
