An overview of Singapore’s pork supply since the 1970s showed the importance of food safety in the larger framework of food security. Singapore’s pork supply went through three phases of changes with the source extending further at each stage. With the increase in food miles, the greenhouse gas emitted during transport of the fresh pork supply rose from 0.8 million to nearly 34 million tonnes. Singapore’s fresh pork market is dominated by Australian supply. The need for source diversification and considerations for Singapore’s ability to sustain the costly imports are evaluated in anticipation of volatile environmental and economic conditions in the future.
