Recently, there is a global rejuvenated interest in timber due to its sustainability and low environmental impact. Scandinavian and North American countries have been using timber as their main construction material for low-rise housing. These countries are currently exploring the usage of timber for high-rise buildings. In comparison, Malaysia, with its abundant timber resources are lagging far behind in timber construction. This paper seeks to understand the underlying barriers to the use of timber in Malaysia. Using quantitative survey, the consumers ‘perception towards timber was investigated. Theory of Planned Behaviour framework was employed to understand the relationship of actors in the specification process. The roles and influences of the different stakeholders are examined using the framework. Recommendations on the use of timber for low rise housing are provided to overcome the obstacles identified.
