dc.description.abstract | Glazing contributes significantly to cooling load of buildings in the tropics where there is heavy reliance on air-conditioning. Greater environmental consciousness and tighter authority requirements necessitate research of new alternatives and practices like electrochromic window (ECW) for increasing energy efficiency whilst addressing occupant requirements. Decades of promising research has been done on potential of ECW for achieving occupant comfort. ECW allow dynamic and responsive regulation of indoor environment by switching its solar transmittance and visible light transmittance. This research fills the identified gaps in literature and aimed to investigate thermal comfort and daylighting performance of ECW, in comparison to conventional glazing, using climatic chambers under real weather conditions a tropical climate. The research hypothesised that ECW is able to enhance both thermal comfort and daylighting performance under Singapore’s tropical climate and achieve indoor thermal comfort for all hours of the day. This research focuses on the thermal comfort and daylighting performance of ECW in west-facing climatic chamber in Singapore with data collected in June and July 2018 for two operating modes of ECW with reference to conventional 6mm glazing. Assessment of thermal comfort and daylighting performance was through PMV-PPD model and illuminance levels respectively. Key findings are 500% improvement in daylighting performance, 64% improvement in peak PPD performance, and 50% improvement in peak PMV performance coupled with 24% energy savings through ECW adoption. | |
