The Kallang Basin was idealized to be a recreational basin for Singapore. This, however, only remained a vision, and its opportunities continue to remain unexplored. Though a large amount of effort and resources were invested in the restoration of the land to its natural condition, the possibilities of an ideal recreational area have not been exploited. This study examines the reasons why the Kallang Basin has not become an ideal recreational centre in Singapore. More specifically, the study probes the interesting urban history of environmental planning at the Kallang Basin as well as the efforts of the Urban Redevelopment Authority to enhance the area. A site survey has been carried out and the data has been compared to various results obtained in a similar survey from 1990. On the basis of the comparison, measures for further development of the Kallang Basin have been suggested.
