dc.description.abstract | The study of biochar in controlling release of fragrances in buildings while adsorbing pollutants has not been researched extensively. This research explores the potential property of biochar in acting as a fragrant dispenser and pollutant adsorber simultaneously. Currently, fragrances are commonly dispensed from bottles that are bought and installed separately, while fabric-based air filters are also commonly used as fragrance dispensers in automobiles and buildings. There is no technology available in the market yet that serves the dual functions of a sorbent to remove air pollutants from the air, adsorb and then release customized fragrance in a controlled manner into the surrounding air stream. In this review, attention will be focused on the use of biochar to play this dual role of a sorbent and an emitter (herein called a BSE filter) as a single product. The application of BSE directly onto the surface of fabric filters with strategic positioning can help to reduce reliant on plastic bottles, contributing to the green movement of sustainable practices and to also effectively optimise the dual functions of BSE as air pollutant sorbent and fragrance emitter in buildings. As we close the gaps explored in this review, we will be able to add value to biochar and empower innovators and the circular economy in proposing a sustainable solution for malodour control in buildings such as hotels, hospitals, offices. The potential enhancement of our current market will open to a future of even greater possibilities as we discover a new perspective on air filters and air care. | |
