dc.description.abstractIn view of the changing climate along with the problems that brings with it, many government and private organizations have been putting in effort to reverse the situation for sustainable development. However, mitigation strategies, though essential, may no longer be sufficient to ensure the wellbeing of the human beings and their environment. Therefore, there is a need to adapt to the changing climate now to ensure survivability. This is especially true for the construction industry as this is one of the most crucial sectors as all other sectors requires facilities and infrastructure to support their activities. This dissertation aims to explore and discover new and feasible adaptation measures and policies that can be implemented in Singapore’s construction industry. Literature review, interviews using Delphi Techniques and a secondary case study on Florida’s Adaptation Strategies have been conducted to achieve the objectives and aim. The hypothesis made by this research is that there is little knowledge about adaptation to climate change among the professionals in the construction industry. The literature review has identified the trend of global climate change and Singapore’s concern with regards to the construction industry. Rising sea level and costal land loss are the top concern. The interviews have also identified the professionals’ knowledge on adaptation and their views on how Singapore can adapt to climate change. Majority of the interviewees are aware of adaptation. However, their responses have revealed that they do not have in depth knowledge on the topic. Lastly, the secondary case study provides a model for Singapore to adopt in order to adapt to climate change. Recommendations have been made to increase the knowledge of professionals through education and trainings and an Adaptation team should be set up to formulate policies that will help the country to adapt to climate change. Research and Development also needs to be undertaken to develop new technologies at low cost.
