With the increase in life expectancy of Singaporeans and the decline in birth rate, the demographic structure of Singapore is witnessing some changes. Social issues, pressure on the working-age group as well as housing issues are some concerns that this demographic shift will bring. Throughout the years, Singapore has placed much emphasis on these issues that an ageing population can bring about. The impending changes necessitate the need to ensure proper resources allocations for the elderly, and nationwide strategies are in place to support them as they age-in-place. However, there is a lack of studies concerning the elderly’s usage of urban spaces and the safety levels of these spaces. Hence, this study undertakes an analysis of understanding the needs of the elderly concerning the urban spaces and their safety. Through a survey questionnaire, the opinions of 216 respondents were collected and organised to understand their use and experience with the urban spaces. Understanding the factors that affected their choice of visits allowed an insight into their preferences and their expectations towards the safety of urban spaces. Their feedback and suggestions were also considered in the study. After analysis, it is revealed that most felt the urban spaces and their facilities were safe for use. However, perception gaps between the target groups were identified. This indicated the need to bridge the perception gaps through understanding the reasons behind these differences. Suitable recommendations are included for future works references. This study aims to ensure the success of ageing-in-place such that the benefits of safe urban spaces can be maximised by the elderly. As more Singaporeans are gradually entering their golden years, they tend to have high expectations and ever-changing demands and needs towards their environment. It is, therefore, crucial to understand and actualise their needs to achieve a conducive environment for all.
