dc.description.abstractThe increasing computing power and developments in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has enabled Cloud Computing (CC) to offer many opportunities in improving the way businesses are run since it increases IT efficiency and business agility. It allows many advantages such as the ease of use, readily available information as well as improves collaboration. The construction industry involves many key players that are very segmented and separated, that integration often becomes an issue. New building projects are expected to be more complex and extensive in size. As a result, traditional communication methods that are distributed and non-integrated will no longer be sustainable in the long run. The introduction of the Construction Industry Transformation Map (CITM) has envisioned an industry that is directed to streamline construction processes by utilizing effective and productive construction methods as well as embracing more digitalisation. With the use of cloud and digital technology, various stakeholders will be able to share information readily, therefore minimizing mistakes, delays and the need for reworks. Eventually, this will speed overall construction process, as well as providing relevant information on the building for future maintenance and retrofitting. However, for small-medium enterprises (SMEs), organizations face many limitations, especially in having to make a big investment in productive technologies due to the capacity of the firm. In addition, the issue of effective collaboration is a pressing problem as the construction industry is constantly collaborating with multiple stakeholders, often outside agencies. Organizations are also encouraged to be internationalised, while trying to survive in a very competitive market. For this reason, this dissertation will cover the status of implementation of CC within Singapore’s Construction SMEs, examine the function of CC implementation, identify key barriers and the existing efforts that are available and propose feasible strategies to tackle the challenges and to reap benefits of Cloud Computing adoption in SMEs. From the findings of the literature review, a survey questionnaire was formulated in order to obtain response from the target group. A total of 75 responses were collected from a sample 296 organizations that was contacted. The responses obtained were collected for statistical analysis to determine if the perception between an organization size, organization’s experience, a respondent’s roles and respondent’s experience in the current role has any statistical differences. By determining such differences, it is to ensure that the data collected does not happen by chance and is a reliable reflection of the industry. The survey revealed the adoption rate for Cloud Computing by contractor SMEs is at 68.75%. The rate shows a promising and positive reflection of Cloud Computing adoption by SMEs in the industry. The top three drivers that pushes for Cloud Computing adoption as obtained by result of the data analysis are Workplace Safety and Health, Sustainable Data Management and Business Continuity. By considering the magnitude of impact and likelihood of occurrence, the top three challenges that are most critical to overcome for the adoption of Cloud Computing are Complexity of New Technology, Top Management Support and Organization Size. In addition, the top three feasible strategies that would motivate the adoption of Cloud Computing obtained from the data analysis are Clear Direction of Action, Establish Cooperation between Different Organizations and Willingness to Change. The findings of this study have highlighted the drivers, challenges and feasible strategies factors that contributes to the awareness of CC adoption in Singapore’s construction industry. Through these findings, the adoption of CC for contractor SMEs will ensure greater opportunities that will be able to support the growth and expansion of the business.
