dc.description.abstract | Singapore’s land transportation is governed by a comprehensive set of rules, regulations, operations and systems to ensure its effectiveness and efficiency. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is the main agency in charge of road operations. Despite efforts from the LTA, road related problems still surfaces every now and then. This study is aimed at understanding the road users’ perception of Singapore roads. Through this understanding, the most significant problem area and the factors that might affect the problem were derived. LTA current road operations were evaluated and possible recommendations were provided. A survey and interviews were conducted as part of the study. The survey consists six parts with a total of thirty-six questions covering the main road operations issues. Through a combination of convenience sampling and chain sampling, a total of 104 responses were collected. For the interviews, three personnel from LTA were interviewed to further understand the current practices as well as to obtain their views towards the survey results. From the analysis of the data collected, the most significant problem area is the road maintenance / works operations. Three possible factors that may affect the problem have been identified through the use of statistical tests. They include the performance of other road operations, the number of road works, and the knowledge of the road users. Based on these identified factors, several recommendations that might be able to reduce the problem have been listed. They include the improving the overall road performance as a whole, reducing the number of road works by setting limitation on the number of road works to be carried out on a single stretch of road, and providing of various avenues for easy access of information relating to the road works. | |
