According to the latest 2010 Census, the population of Singapore is increasing rapidly as more new towns are developed with well planned amenities and facilities. Tampines is the first cycling town in Singapore that allows cycling on footways. Moreover, intra-town cycling has become ever popular, as people usually cycle around the neighbourhood. It is the most convenient and affordable means to cycle for a short distance to get to your destination. It is hypothesized that understanding and analyzing the profile of cyclists in Singapore can help to build a better cycling environment to cater to this demand. A survey will be done in Tampines New Town titled “Intra Town Cyclist Survey in Tampines, Singapore”, and the results will form the basis for analysis and discussion in the following sections. The survey will be structured to emphasize main concerns cyclists have that must be noted, and ultimately prompt suggestions for improvement not only from cyclists themselves but also from other relevant sources of successful examples. This paper will conclude with the findings that different types of cyclists have different patterns and usage of cycling facilities but safety and design of facilities are main concerns of all residents. It is hoped that authorities can make careful considerations in the planning and design of future cycling networks and facilities pertaining to issues raised by residents, and incorporate the suggestions made wherever possible.
