Abstract: To adopt BIM efficiently and effetely, object-based modelling is getting more popular that links the real products with BIM modelling design, each of the digital building elements represents an individual physical manufacturer products. Online BIM object libraries play a big role on contributing better design and productivity enhancement. However, the current BIM libraries adoption rate is relatively low and far behind from what is expected. The main barriers from those libraries are: firstly, the non-guaranteed objects quality related to physical appearance accuracy and attributes reliability; secondly, the non-consistent classification systems of the libraries cause trouble for users and the non-common formats that the objects provided increase the interoperability issue across BIM libraries. Through literature review and case study, this dissertation aims to identify factors that impact the quality of objects and interoperability issue of BIM libraries. The impact of maturity of Level of Detail (LoD) attached in the process of creating objects will be discussed and the type of objects adopted will be analysed. Lack of a proper quality checking and verification system also mention in this study. Meanwhile, the issue arise from the different classification system and naming conventions and inconsistent file formats across BIM libraries are studied. Finally, an IFC4-based bSDD compliance framework is proposed to ensure BIM libraries providing practical digital elements to better serve the increasing needs for element-based modelling.
