Abstract: Singapore is famous worldwide for its beautiful and highly-manicured landscaped environment garnering the title, “The Garden City”. But today going green is not enough as population increases and resources are slowly depleting. This report looks into the integration of agriculture in unused and underutilized spaces in public housing estates in Singapore through adoption of community gardening and adjustment of urban planning policies. It aims to establish that Urban Agriculture can be a considerable alternative to the mere provision of greeneries in the environment, moreover, an approach to achieve a significant increase in local food production. An experimental integration study in a public housing estate proves the availability of spaces conducive for cultivation, which in effect can potentially contribute to the local food production. The report shows that more than fifty percent of the targeted increase in local food supply can be achieved by utilizing a portion of the existing open spaces all over Singapore. It opens up opportunities for these spaces to be more functional at the same time enhance the social and economic dimension of urban lifestyle leading to a more sustainable living condition. This paper delivers how much Urban Agriculture can be a beneficial movement that will shape a self-reliant, food productive, yet still a green Singapore.
