Abstract: Urban flash flooding has become a critical problem posed to the people during every monsoon season in Singapore. With unpredictable flash flooding occurring frequently, many are being affected. This thesis paper started with investigating on various possibilities that might cause flash flooding and identified that it is due to insensitive and insensible development towards hydrology cycle resulting in large surface runoff being drained off from site immediately congesting lower stream during heavy downpour. The thesis begins to look at possible architecture intervention in ways to delay water flow from exiting the building and the site and value-adds to the water quality, spatial experience and performative of the building in the process of such water movement delay. An architectural proposition was established on how building or site will be like if it is able to function like a natural terrain in addressing hydrology cycle in retaining water and treat water. Different types of water filtration was adopted in various areas of the building so that water will flow through these series of filtration before exiting the building with certain percentage of water being trap in the building. Hence, the amount of water that exits the building or site would be greatly reduced. The use of architecture to manifest hydrology cycle and being able to articulate its performative nature help to shape how people uses the space based on water. A multi-tier wetland scheme is proposed where the building functioned like a vertical wetland in allowing water to flow through different layers with each layer helps to retain and cleanse the water before being discharge to the next layer. In this way, the building is able to successfully retain a certain amount of water that can be generate for own consumption and at the same time cleanse the water so that it is suitable for non-portable usage. The design adopted a submersible idea where parts of the building and its site will be flooded with water during heavy downpour and large ponding after a rain. This creates spatial affordance and increase sensitivity towards impact of hydrology and weather has on the spatial quality. Apart from the spatial experience, the performative aspect of the design helps to generate and store water for own consumption; the amount of water trap in the building is able to cool down the temperature of the environment.
