dc.description.abstract | Presenteeism is the concept of workers persisting to continue working despite feeling unwell, and attempting to hide their condition, thus, exacerbating the consequences (Kim et al., 2016). While the issue of presenteeism is certainly gaining more relevance and interest, there is limited literature done in the context of Singapore’s Construction Industry. In Singapore, her industry’s strong reliance on migrant workers makes it more vulnerable to presenteeism since workers from differing cultures will tend to behave in unpredictable means. As such, a strong emphasise should be paid on understanding the mechanism of presenteeism. The construction industry has been continuously plagued as precarious job as the fatal and injured rate remained high through the years (WSH Institute, 2015). Safety lapse and productivity loss due to a reduced in bodily function may have indirectly caused the incident. Despite the Ministry of Manpower’s willingness in attempting to mandate safety at the worksite, through the Workplace Safety and Health Act, presenteeism is still very much a continuous issue since acute illnesses such as the common cold and flu are being ignored. For this reason, this dissertation attempts to identify the models and mechanism of presenteeism and to propose some recommendations that can hopefully impact the perception of the key stakeholders. To achieve the objective, much literature was reviewed, interviews and questionnaire were developed, and the data collected was processed through descriptive and statistical analyses using key analysis software available in the market. It is hoped that through the development of understanding the mechanism of presenteeism and attempting to apply it to the worksite will allow the workers and management to understand the importance of dealing with presenteeism that eventually translates to positive statistics in Singapore’s future Workplace Safety and Health goals and objectives in the industry. | |
