dc.description.abstract | In Singapore, the issue of perceiving post-independent public housing as heritage is complex, especially those of difficult historical backgrounds. An example is Everton Park, a HDB estate which formerly served as housing for laborious port workers working in the Tanjong Pagar port. Everton Park is also historically significant in the heritage landscape of corporate housings for port workers of various hierarchies. The primary aim of this thesis is to explore the role and response of modern public housing, specifically Everton Park, in the curation of Tanjong Pagar as a heritage landscape for port workers. Making use of primary historical background research as well as iterative design explorations, the thesis attempts to demonstrate the high potential for estates such as Everton Park to celebrate its difficult historical past, while being a liveable, regenerated estate that is socially integrated into its immediate precinct and heritage landscape. This enables modern public housing to serve as a complementary layer to the heritage landscape, making the landscape more plural and inclusive. The curation of the heritage landscape is executed through thematizing 3 main heritage areas based on historical research: Alive, Ageless and Assemble. After that, the conservation plan of Everton Park is designed with key interventions that facilitate the revealing of port histories, social regeneration and integration of communities. In the field of architectural conservation or heritage studies, this thesis aims to value-add to the study and conversation of modernist architecture, in particular modern public housing, a typology often disputed as heritage. This thesis also aims to broaden the scope of heritage landscapes to include modernist architecture, in a local context where heritage landscapes are often skewed towards pre-independent built heritage curated for specific political agenda. | |
