The thesis is a response to a need for greater creativity in the our local films by allowing film education to be more accessible to the larger public. While the independent film-making scene is burgeoning in Singapore, critics moan the lack of creative content in the local works. The thesis proposes a new type of film school, the New York Film Academy, which is set to nurture creativity in our growing pool of aspiring filmmakers. The school, situated in Bugis, an artsy quarter of the city, engages the city in a way no film school here has done before. The city becomes the infinite film set against which any film can be shot. The thesis explores the notion of a framework which one begins to fill in with a narrative that will breath life into the building and infuse it with a spirit of an actively-learning film academy. Students are encouraged to own and appropriate spaces as and when needed, moving out and beyond the classroom. The black box in the city remains an insular container no more.
