UNDERSTANDING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SPATIAL INTEGRATION AND SATISFACTION IN SLUMS: A COMPARISON BASED ON A SLUM AREA IN BANDUNG USING ALPHA-ANALYSIS AND AN ETHNOGRAPHIC APPROACH. ScholarBank@NUS Repository. | Abstract: | The objective of this paper is to classify and understand the impact of spatial configuration of the slum area of Babakan Jati in Bandung, Indonesia on their level of satisfaction. This can be used in future to analyse the applicability of integration to slum dwellers. For this study, comparisons are made with two other areas in Singapore: Kampong Buangkok and Lengkok Mariam, a housing estate in Changi. Through the analysis of space and ethnographic methods, the aim is to delve into the conjunction between spatial configuration and the contentment of its dwellers. The comprehension and establishment of this intricate relationship between the two will be key to unlocking new methods and approaches in the upgrading of slum areas in future. The initial portion of the paper looks at existing methods and objectives of slum upgrading, its development in Bandung as well as the difference in Singapore. The next part targets the analysis which can be broken down into study of the logic of space and an ethnographic approach. For the study of the logic of space, alpha-analysis helps to break down the spatial configuration of the layouts and determine if it produces or affects desired social outcomes. Ethnographic methods include survey analysis of typical livelihood trends as well as general satisfaction to learn from and draw existing relationships between that and the spaces. ii From the results obtained from the two approaches, spatial autonomy plays a huge part in ensuring satisfaction of the inhabitants amidst constant evolution of social space. The measure of level of satisfaction when using privacy, location and size as indicators show a directly proportional relationship, where areas of high spatial integration translate into higher levels of satisfaction. | URI: | https://scholarbank.nus.edu.sg/handle/10635/220455 |
