The aim of this study is to research the causes of discrepancy between the design and the actual energy consumption in the heat ventilation and air conditioning system (HVAC) system in Khoo Teck Puat Hospital. There are four objectives in this study. It includes the investigation of the operational pattern of the hospital and the HVAC control, Building Management System (BMS) and other areas that energy is wasted. Providing recommendation is also one of the objectives in this study. The study is carried out by various research methodology including interviews, survey and also on- site observation. Interviews have been carried out with personnel in the hospital and also energy experts from the industry. In addition, a survey has been done on the end users of the HVAC system in the hospital. Observation has also been conducted to investigate whether there are any existing problems. The results of the study show that there are several causes of the discrepancy between the design and the actual energy consumption. One of the causes is the problem with end users who are not familiar with the HVAC system in the hospital. The study has also identified that there are several areas where energy is being wasted. Other than that, the BMS is also identified as one of the causes. The paper is then concluded with recommendations on how to solve the problems on discrepancy. The solution includes adopting new technologies and education to end users on the controls of the HVAC system in the hospital. Limitation of this study includes protecting the confidentiality of the hospital and also limitation on resources.
