Bicycles are gaining popularity as a feeder mode to certain transport centers as well as for making domestic trips within residential towns in Singapore. However, the provision of cycle parking is limited and the quality is often questionable. Although cycle parking has been provided at certain areas, indiscriminate parking of bicycles along walkways and roadsides is still apparent. They are often deemed as an eyesore in the urban landscape and are causing inconvenience to pedestrians in some instances. Currently, there has been little or no documentation on the status of bicycle users. The basic idea is that by studying and observing the spontaneously- parked bicycles, and those at designated cycle parking stations across transport centers in Singapore, one might gain a deeper understanding on the demographics and usage patterns of this user group. The adequacy, appropriateness of location, design and spatial configuration of existing cycle parking stations will also be studied to see how existing space is used. It is hoped that the findings will allow landscape designers to rethink on the potential of bettering the integration of bicycle parking facilities into the existing physical infrastructure based on the parking habits of bicycle users.
