dc.description.abstractThe planning principles of Singapore's New Towns envisions a well-integrated relationship between the Housing and Development Board's (HDB) residential estates, and its Mass Rapid Transit network. This is aligned to a Transit Oriented Development mode of planning, which also strongly advocates for pedestrian friendly environments. With a rising population and more New Towns to be developed in the future, the design for more efficient, integrated and pedestrianized HDB streets is pertinent. This dissertation aims to examine the accessibilities of current new town streets, in order to make more informed design town planning decisions in the future. Using quantitative accessibility measures such as Depthmap X and Urban Network Analysis, three case studies were selected and evaluated on their accessibility measures. More importantly, this study goes beyond the conventional mode of analyzing streets by their vehicular roads alone. An added layer of pedestrian spaces such as HDB void decks and corridors are considered in the analyses as well. This inclusion of the local context is vital in thoroughly understanding the accessibilities of these New Town estates, and also provides valuable insights and considerations to the designing of future New Town streets.
