ScholarBank@NUS Repository. | Abstract: | Emerging infectious diseases have been of much concern lately due to the spread of the SARS virus. It has tested the abilities of medical institutions, and the tolerances of humanity. There is indeed a certain stigma attached to SARS as international travellers shun countries affected by the SARS virus. It is a manifestation of how a minute virus can lead to serious social, economic and political repercussions as evidenced by the situation in Hong Kong. Governments have set up various research bodies or health teams to help control and contain the aerial or physical transmission of the virus. Until a cure or vaccine can be found, the most effective means of containment now is to quarantine and isolate people who had contact with infected patients (i.e. by contact tracing). The quarantine measure essentially isolates possible cases for the incubation period of the virus, such that they can be sent to the hospital upon contracting the disease and not spread to their family or other public members. Containment depends on the effectiveness of epidemiological practices and the proper design of quarantine/ isolation facilities. | URI: | https://scholarbank.nus.edu.sg/handle/10635/220255 |
