Abstract: Rapid urbanization has led to the dense urban landscape and much greenery has been sacrificed in order to give way to new developments. To address the problem of severe reduction in green space in the environment, creative ideas have been employed to incorporate greenery into developments. Hence, it is essential to examine if there is a significant impact of rooftop greenery on developments. Retail malls will be the type of development that will be examined in this study. The two hypotheses to be tested are: (1) Majority of shoppers are aware of the rooftop greenery in the retail mall and (2) Shoppers are attracted to a shopping mall because of the presence of rooftop greenery. Shoppers from three malls with rooftop greenery were surveyed to find out if they are likely to be attracted to a shopping mall due to the presence of rooftop greenery. This will show the impact of adding rooftop greenery on the attractiveness of the shopping mall as the attractiveness will be measured by its ability to attract shoppers. Results showed that majority of shoppers are aware of the rooftop greenery, but the frequency of visits to this green feature is low. Therefore, more efforts can be put in to encourage shoppers to visit the rooftop greenery. The survey results also showed that rooftop greenery is unlikely to be the crucial factor in affecting their decision to go to the mall, though it will be an attractive side factor.
