dc.description.abstract | In a complex organism like the city, it is the environment involving dynamic interactions of the physical spaces with the peoples’ lives, which, identified as the condition of “urbanism, is seen distinctly in the street edges, forming the city’s immediate image. This paper thus highlights the significance of the edges, which cease to be mere pedestrian thoroughfares, but develop into a place themselves, with unique functions, definition and identity. Further analyzing the factors of the experience in the street edges, particularly in spontaneously developing cities, the author discusses how the spatial formations of the urban conditions and their different impacts contribute to the unique qualities of this type of edge space. Presenting the transformation and condition of the hybrid urbanism `of the edges of Dadabhai Nowrojee street in the Fort area of Mumbai, the author attempts to analyze the configurations and the consequent uniqueness in experience. In the process, the attempt is also to evaluate the extent of influence of informal urbanism on the same, endeavouring to find the essence of the edge character which brings out the uniqueness. | |
