Abstract: The thesis research began with the investigation of network of waterways in Singapore on how it has changed or characterized our landscapes ever since the early 1900s. From the series of studies, it is observed that the nation has been carrying out acts of fortification through cleaning up, provision of physical water infrastructuresand display of architectural/engineering feat suggested in the tidal gates, dams/dykes and service reservoirs that were constructed. This firstlayer of fortification is further built upon at the periphery ofwater bodies by another layer of restricted land uses (such as large tracts of golf courses, military camps, forested area, industrial uses etc). This reduced level of access by the public are exhibited by the designated public parks that constitute only a small percentage of the overall waterfront. In the upcoming developments and public amenities proposed under the ABC Waters Programmeby PUB, most waterfront activities seemed to be lacking in creativity and variety. In addition, the recenthype over waterfront development such as the Jurong Lake District Plan will put stress on our limited land especially in the remaining undeveloped waterfront.
