dc.description.abstract | Singapore is an immigrant city. Within the four million population, a quarter of it is immigrants. The ways the immigrants live have always been a bit different from local people because of social background and the cultural difference. Yet every group of foreigners seek to be common and thus they congregate. Every community has their own space to live, and so does new immigrants from China, though they are ethnically related to Singapore local Chinese. This dissertation investigates the spaces the community of new Chinese immigrants gathers and their way of living. Chinatown is chosen as the site for study because of the history it bears. It was where the pioneer Chinese immigrants set off during colonial period, and it went through the forceful changes done by government project. Now the new Chinese immigrants once again choose Chinatown as the place to set off, but the only difference is last time there was no Chinatown, and now, there is one. Spaces relate to food industry is specifically investigated because of the importance of food culture to Chinese people and also because it is the most prominent industry that gathers new immigrants from China. | |
