Abstract: With the advancement of technology, digital applications in architecture are often regarded as formalism and sometimes, a culprit for loss of creativity to the human mind. As a response to this usual discourse, this dissertation puts forward an approach to hypothesize a new generative parametric skin system that innovatively synthesizes computation design with material and technology to demonstrate/suggest that the application of computational architecture is not merely a tool to assist architects and designers to create complicated forms. Such misconceptions of computational architecture are normally criticized as beautiful architecture that lack depth. By reappropriating computational design with innovation and ingenuity, new sensitive intelligent systems can be developed to elevate computational architecture into a higher level. Hence, potential usefulness of computational design and operations could be appreciated, meanwhile reassuring its misconceptions. This dissertation employs a close study of parametric architecture and technology to create an intelligent system that addresses the issues of sustainability and reconciliation with the environment’s resources. Apart from its functionality, innovation is incorporated to affirm the role of computational architecture at its foremost level. The title Generative Architecture suggests that conventional uses and thoughts of computation should be beyond the achievement of an architectural product. The word Generative replaces Production here. As parametric computation is a technique of behavioural interrelation for organisation and self-generation, some design principles could be abstracted from computation to create architecture that are continuously generating.
