dc.description.abstract | Singapore’s rapid urbanisation and development in the past had led to the destruction of many cultural and heritage sites. However, the government has recognised the need to conserve sites replete with culture and heritage, leading to the conservation of the SIT (Singapore Improvement Trust) flats in Tiong Bahru estate in 2003. These flats are one of the first few flats being built in Singapore, and is a reminder to Singapore’s colonial history. The SIT flats have transformed with the passage of time, and this study seeks to examine how these transformations have impacted the residents and retailers in the area. Tiong Bahru estate is currently undergoing gentrification, where older residents have chose to move out while younger and more affluent families have moved into the estate. There has been an influx of new retailers, leading to a change of demographics in the area. Several amenities such as the market have also been upgraded in the estate to better serve the public. These changes have brought about problems such as traffic congestion due to increasing number of visitors, but has also provided benefits to the people in terms of greater variety of products and services in the area. While new retailers are welcomed, there is a need to balance the old and new retailers in order to ensure that the old retailers do not get forced out of the area. This is important as the old retailers complement the area, providing a rustic feel to the environment. Conservation efforts in the area is deemed as sufficient, and both residents and retailers want the area to remain conserved. Residents want the area to be conserved due to the unique architectural elements which provide nostalgia and a relaxing environment, while retailers feel that this will retain the unique identity of Tiong Bahru, bringing about more patrons for their businesses. There is a need to keep culture and heritage sites conserved as it will provide posterity with tangible pieces of history. Thus, Singapore must constantly balance the need of continued development and urbanisation with the conservation of important sites as it will serve as a reminder of Singapore’s history, as well as provide the people with a sense of identity. Despite rapid urbanisation of surrounding developments, the SIT flats of Tiong Bahru still retain its former glory, providing future generations with a reminder of Singapore’s past. | |
