dc.description.abstract | Although the majority see slums as dirty and unhealthy places, lacking some of the fundamental housing services, an increasing number of architects and planners have started to discover some of the good socio-spatial qualities of slums. In terms of scale, slums are composed of tiny housing units rather than huge and monolithic; in terms form, they are random and mostly formless as they utilise space in the most efficient way; in terms of existence, they are significantly flexible and resilient and have the capacity to grow. The intelligence of Bottom-Up mechanism is rooted in the people. On the contrary, the modernist planning theories which started off from the solicitude for the housing conditions of urban population ended up being dehumanising. The massive scale public housing movements had resulted in the sterile "machines for living" and unhealthy social environment. In fact, from the view point of Emergent Urbanism, slums are urban spaces in transition, whose capacity has often been overlooked. This paper is a study of the spatial and social formation in typical slum settlements, and whether through small-scale top-down intervention they will show the capacity to regenerate themselves and eventually become an integral part of the city. My research includes the use of a mixed quantitative and qualitative methods, including field research, interviews and data collection, to determine what constitutes a socially cohesive urban settlement. | |
