dc.description.abstract | An accelerated rise in global sea level has a severe impact along the coast of Singapore. The decreasing land mass results in a loss of the recreational coast and activities, which are highly valued as urban getaways. Besides, the rising sea level and increase in population overtime may results in greater energy and water woes. In order to retain the recreational coastal activities, coastal development should be adaptive and react to rising sea, turning the global phenomenon into a non threat. The land and sea interface will no longer be viewed as a boundary but a continuum of urbanization via “sea” reclamation. By turning commonly viewed threats into opportunities, the rising sea level enhanced the coast as a unique landscape for renewable energy and water harvesting. The enhanced recreational coast-scape is a resource harvesting structural system that is cellular and scalable. It extends the existing landscape and becomes a new ground to replace the inundated areas. Due to the cellular nature of the new coast-scape, the programmatic spaces and positions can change overtime and grow in response to the retreating shoreline and urban influences. | |
