dc.description.abstractCurrently, Singapore is facing a multitude of environmental issues resulting from global warming. Besides that, the growing population, physical land limitation and the increasing demand for private ownership of vehicles have contributed to the increasing pressure on the transport infrastructure in Singapore. With measures intended towards limiting the use of private vehicles as a measure to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions plus some private users opting to use public transport due to hike in global oil price, the sustainability of Singapore’s public railway transportation system is going to be important. Therefore, achieving environmental and social sustainability in Singapore’s public- transport system are two critical aspects that have been considered in this dissertation. Within the environmental aspect, in depth analytical studies into the possibility of applying green features onto current transport infrastructures, particularly the trains’ stations will be considered. In the next area of focus, in depth studies on achieving sustainability will be carry out to determine the sustainability of the transport network by looking at government’s present and new proposed transport policies. Further, comparative studies will be made with other major cities’ in order to derive ideas that can be applied to enhance Singapore’s transport system, and also solving the long existed congestion problem. In time to come, sustainability will be the key towards transforming Singapore’s future transport into a green yet efficient system, meeting future demands.
