dc.description.abstract | A cellular automaton is a mathematical model that is able to perform complex computations with the knowledge of local information. Practitioners from various fields of study have exploited this model for modeling different applications to study complex behavior. This paper provides a survey of available literature of the methodologies employed in various projects applied in the field of architecture. It introduces what CA (cellular automata) are, the common types of CA, how our predecessors had employed CA and how current projects are making a more feasible approach with it. Previous applications of cellular automata to architectural design had often been more towards spatial exploration and analysis. Due to the nature of early CA that is fully automated, the results obtained are often conceptual and impractical as it lacks the control or feedback from the designer. The last part of the paper discusses 8 different projects that had employed CA in different ways in the field of architecture. The means of which conventional CA can be applied and modified to meet different design intents as from the projects is of great interest. This paper seeks to document and discuss the methods employed to provide an introduction to designing with CA for new entrants. | |
