ScholarBank@NUS Repository. | Abstract: | Singapore is a young nation layered with complexity of identity and culture. In the process of nation building and pursuit of economic success and global recognition, we have witnessed a dramatic transformation of the physical landscape, the lost of places of yesteryears which holds memories of many Singaporeans. Amidst constant change, globalization and influx of foreign presence, as Singapore celebrated her 50th year of independence in the Golden Jubilee in 2015, Singaporeans were caught in a nation-wide wave of nostalgia in an attempt to establish a national identity, sense of belonging and connection with the pasts. In the past few years, we have witnessed an increase in the number of heritage-related events in Singapore, organized and initiated by various institutions and social units ranging from the government, community groups, interest groups and individuals. These events serve as a platform to bring Singaporeans together to discover Singapore’s history and culture and to come together to share memories and stories and is a compass for Singaporeans in the search for a sense of belonging and identity to one’s culture and nation, or an anchor to one’s roots amidst a rapidly-changing landscape and increasingly diverse society. Navigating between national interest and personal interests, Singaporeans attempt to find their past, their future and an identity that is meaningful to them. | URI: | https://scholarbank.nus.edu.sg/handle/10635/219937 |
