GREEN MARK SCHEME IN ENCOURAGING GREEN BUILDING AND ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS IN CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY

Abstract

Global issues like warming of the earth which causes climate change and the rising oil prices has made many countries to look into sustainable or green building as the building sector has consumed the most energy consumption as compared to other sectors. In order to curb this issue, many countries have come up with schemes to tackle issue of lessening the environmental impact created by the completed building and during construction. Singapore has come up with the Green Mark Scheme to address the mentioned concern. The focus of this research looked more into during construction of the building. The Green Mark scheme introduced about two years has several issues which may give implications to the scheme. The research seeks to identify the participation for green mark certification and contractors in green building. Two hypotheses are then drawn out to be tested for this study, following the interview and surveys are given out make the study. Studies have shown that green mark certification is indeed having a good progress currently and the rate of taking up would be more in the coming years through the improved new scheme, government standards and benefits given. Emphasis in green in the industry can also help in creating more environmental awareness. However, organization like BCA should look further at the contractors, to encourage them to gain knowledge and expertise in the area of green, so as to be prepared for the changing industry needs. In addition, by making them understand about the green mark certification will help in minimizing the fragmentation in among the players, so all can work towards a common goal.
