dc.description.abstract | Human exposure to airborne particulate matter (PM) varies both temporally and spatially. It is therefore necessary to conduct comprehensive studies focusing on assessment and mitigation of personal exposure (PE) to PM in urban microenvironments (MEs), especially in highly urbanized and densely populated cities, to identify appropriate strategies to improve urban air quality and mitigate the health effects of PM. Systematic field studies were carried out in diverse urban MEs using portable PM measurement devices. In addition, this research focused on the chemical characterization of PM and subsequent health risk assessment based on PM-bound toxic elements. Improvement in indoor air quality was explored using different indoor ventilation and PM exposure mitigation measures. Overall, this comprehensive doctoral study provides a novel PM exposure assessment framework as well as mitigation measures, integrating indoor and outdoor air quality and linking the extent, place, duration, and frequency of human exposure to PM in diverse MEs. | |
