Abstract: In the last few decades, the valorization of marine-based biomass has attracted substantial attention for the synthesis of value-added nitrogen-containing chemicals. However, the design of effective catalytic strategies for the production of organonitrogen compounds from chitin derivatives is still progressing due to the structural complexity and rigidity of chitin. In this thesis, several strategies for the transformation of chitin and chitin derivatives were proposed using catalysts in a range of reactions. In the first approach, non-treated chitin was effectively hydrolyzed into monomers using LiBr AMSH system. Moreover, a one-pot hydrolysis of raw chitin over low-cost and recyclable zeolites in LiBr MSH under mild conditions was reported. Another strategy was introduced for the synthesis of 3A5AF from NAG over catalysts without the addition of boric acid to in γ-valerolactone-water solvent system. Furthermore, the water-soluble chitin hydrolysates were produced from demineralized shrimp shell waste by the direct homogenous acid addition during ball-milling.
