Abstract: Speculators add considerably to the volatility and momentum that we see in the markets. On the other hand, previous studies have shown that there exists a positive relationship between the financial performance of companies and their respective stock market performance. Therefore. Any movement in the market may create turbulence in the financial performance of the companies and vice versus. This study emphasizes on the impacts of the Asian Financial Crisis 1997 had on the 17 listed property companies. Financial performances of the sampled property companies are analyzed using financial ratios. The stock market performances are also covered with comparisons made across the industry and companies. Relevant performances before the crisis are weighed against those after the crisis Therefore, data over the precrisis period (1993 - 1996) and post-crisis period (1998 - 2001) are required. By observing the trend in the performances, investors may gain better insights in the local property market and therefore establish more confidence in the stock market.
