Abstract: In the 1950s, the publication industry in Hong Kong was influenced by the Cultural Cold War in Asia. Publications founded during this period of time have included some political propaganda agendas. However, the Young Companion pictorial (Overseas Edition) founded in 1954 has chosen a different path from other pictorials. The monthly pictorial claimed to be an independent and private-owned publication. It distanced itself from politics and instead focused on the arts and "taste". The Young Companion characterized itself by its style of fine culture, for example, photography, painting, calligraphy and literary works. The editors, writers and readers of the Young Companion mostly consist of new immigrants who had fled to Hong Kong around 1950 from the newly founded socialist regime in Mainland China. Therefore, the contents of this pictorial reflected the new immigrants' imagination of Hong Kong. The fictions written by popular writers were published in each issue of the Young Companion, the writers too, were mainly new immigrants. Many of the fictions were set in Hong Kong background, and they reflected a similar imagination of the city as other contents of the pictorial. Also, the fictions depicted a common mindset of the new immigrants, which is the search of Shanghai's image in the city of Hong Kong.
