dc.description.abstract | Lim Keng Lian (Lin Qingnian, 1893-1968) was a Chinese community leader in Singapore in the first half of the 20th century. He had been actively involved in many community and social activities. However, till today, very few scholars have paid their attention to the indepth studies of Lim Keng Lian. The aim of this thesis is thus to investigate the roles Lim Keng Lian played in Singapore's Chinese community and his contributions to the society. Lim Keng Lian came from a family of tea merchant in Fujian Province, China. He was admitted to Foochow Provincial Industrial School (I j'H W AZLLik^f" 11 after completing a traditional Chinese education. Later he furthered his studies at Peking University. In 1925, the family business, Lim Kim Thye Tea Merchant expanded and Lim Keng Lian was sent to Southeast Asia to open new branches. Lim Keng Lian opened the first branch in Kuala Lumpur, later he moved the head office to Singapore. The business flourished and very soon Lim Keng Lian became actively involved in the Chinese community in Singapore. This thesis will examine the significance of Lim Keng Lian from two aspects, first, his role as a Chinese community leader in Singapore; second, his role as a leader of the Chinese education in Singapore. Lim Keng Lian's role as a Chinese community leader was demonstrated by his involvement in the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCCI). Lim Keng Lian was an active member of SCCCI from 1931 to 1957. In 1933 and 1937, he was elected as the Vice Chairman of SCCCI, and in 1935 he was elected as the Chairman. He was responsible to lead SCCCI to progress steadily and to protect the interests of the Chinese. Besides, Lim Keng Lian deeply valued the importance of education, he devoted much of his energy to supporting the development and improvement of the Chinese education in Singapore. This thesis will also explore Lim Keng Lian's relationship with China and the British colonial government in Singapore. Lim Keng Lian had a close relationship with the Kuomintang. He was appointed several positions by the Chinese Nationalist Government. Besides political involvement, Lim Keng Lian also paid attention to the economic well-being of the people, and put a lot of effort into improving the economy of China. On the other hand, Lim Keng Lian was less connected to the British colonial government, mainly due to his involvement in the nationalistic movement which was condemned by the British colonial government. However, as a pragmatic Chinese leader, Lim Keng Lian saw the need to maintain a positive relation with the British colonial government, he respected and followed the rules set by the latter. Lim Keng Lian's role as a Chinese leader was recognized by the British colonial government by appointing him as a member of the Chinese Advisory Board, an organisation under the British colonial government.Lim Keng Lian (Lin Qingnian, 1893-1968) was a Chinese community leader in Singapore in the first half of the 20th century.
