Anthony Chen is a young Singapore filmmaker. He graduated from Singapore Ngee Ann Polytechnic and studied at National film & Television school in UK for his master degree. He has gained rich experience in short films' making. In 2007, his short film <Ah Ma> became the first Singapore film to be awarded at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival. His first feature film <ILO ILO> is about a Singaporean family of three and their newly arrived Filipino maid. The maid and the naughty boy she cares for, soon form a bond. Their unique connection continues to develop and she becomes an unspoken part of the family. This film made a great success. It won the Camera d'Or for best first feature film and also won four Golden Horse Awards in Taiwan. With this film <ILO ILO>, Anthony Chen opens a new page in the history of Singapore film industry and he also made a contribution to the world's Chinese film. This thesis focuses on the film <ILO ILO>. The first part examines how the family was represented in the film in order to show the director's reflection on urban modernization. The second part of the thesis explores the narrative politics by observing how the maid's perspective constructs a broader understanding of Singapore.Anthony Chen is a young Singapore filmmaker.
